CERT NOVEMBER VOLUNTEER

The November Volunteer of the month goes out to a former school teacher, Jean Busby. She deserves this distinction because of her outstanding service to CERT. Jean is well known for her dedication to the CERT programs “Are You Ready?” and the Neighborhood Disaster Program. Along with that, she constantly comes up with innovative teaching aids and techniques for the group. If anyone is ready for a disaster, it’s Jean Busby, her family and neighborhood. Jean dedicates her life to the service of others whether it’s her 27 years as a sixth-ninth grade school teacher in Fresno, California or helping to care for her elderly mother in a Florence Care facility or helping out at the local L.D.S. church or even her service to her family, neighbors and friends. If you know anything about Jean Busby, you know how artistic she can be as well. Jean’s husband is Don who was a Sales Representative for Mother‘s Cake and Cookie Company before retiring and eventually moving to Florence. Does that sound like a delicious job or what? They have two grown children Debbie and Bob. Jean says Debbie is working on a Masters Degree in Social Work at National University in Sacramento, CA. and her so son has earned duel degrees in International Business and Law and Architectural Electronic Micro Chip Design. He also does under the ice scuba diving and has helped teach and analyze other divers in Antarctica. Jean has a grandson who is involved in LDS Missionary work in Japan. So you can see Jean has a full plate of activities and service. Thank you Jean Busby for being an important part of the CERT program here. We appreciate it. Keep up the good work.

The National Weather Service

Skywarn Weather Spotters are a National Weather Service (NWS) team of volunteers, trained to observe and report significant weather. Weather spotters support their local community and emergency managers by providing the NWS with timely and accurate severe weather reports. These reports are an integral part of the NWS mission to help saves lives and property through flood and weather watches, warnings, and advisories. Accurate and reliable weather information from the general public is often difficult to obtain. The NWS has found that trained weather spotters greatly improve information quality. The NWS works with other volunteer organizations in the Skywarn Weather Spotter program, such as Amateur Radio, the American Red Cross, and local emergency managers.

C.E.R.T. Board of Directors Meeting September 13, 2006

The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m.

Attendees were Board members: Lon Bradley, Paul Cornett, Jean Busby, Dave Davis and Chief John Buchanon. Also present were 36 other members.

The Minutes of July, 2006 which had been posted on the Web site were approved.

The Treasurer was not present to provide a report..

Chief Buchanon talked about his desires for organization, that everything CERT related should go through Dave Davis. That in his new assignments with Citizen Corps Dave would be representing the City in many ways. The Chief also favorably compared our area’s preparation and participation to most of the other cities on the coast. He indicated that our efforts are being held up as a model and incentive for other cities. The Chief and Dave Davis then handed out certificates and badges to new CERT graduates.

Dave Davis then provided some additional details on his assignment with Citizen Corps.

Lon talked to the attendees about the importance of efficient communications and how we will start having training sessions with our radios and drills to ensure that everyone knows how to do all the necessary tasks.

The annual election to the Board was the final item on the agenda. The nominating committee presented a slate of three names to fill the 3 vacancies on the Board. The following members had agreed to stay on the Board for another year: Cal Crowe, Dayna Davis, Denise Crowe, Ray Ericson, and Lon Bradley. Jean Busby and Anne Machalek had decide to stay if they could split the Education Director spot. The three nominees are Phyllis Mauldin, Debbie Golub and David Stoutenburg. There were no nominations from the floor. The three nominees were elected by acclamation.

It was announced that Sharon McCloud, Jean Busby and Anne Machalek. have prepared a new book “Organizing Neighborhoods for Disaster Preparedness. This will be the next step in preparing the Florence Area. As more people complete the CERT and Are You Ready classes it will then be possible to organize the local neighborhoods. Any of our members can obtain a copy of the book and start in on their neighborhood, and using any one of the three authors as an advisor is encouraged.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 p.m.

Respectively Submitted
