EIGHT-POINT EARTHQUAKE
NO APRIL FOOLS

A magnitude 8.0 undersea earthquake triggered a tsunami that has killed at least fifteen people (more were expected),including children, in the Solomon Islands. Tsunami warnings were issued for parts of Australia as well. According to the US Geological Survey, the magnitude 8.0 quake struck Sunday, April 1, 2007 at 20:39:56 (UTC) about 45 km (25 mi) south-southeast of Gizo, New Georgia Islands, Solomon Islands, at a depth of 10 km. The tsunami was reported as several yards, possibly ten feet, high on the western side of the Solomon Islands and has destroyed at least two villages, leaving at least four people missing and fifteen dead. At least six of those who died were children. The town of Munda reports heavy damage from the tsunami. "Two villages were reported to have been completely inundated. We have received reports of four people missing," said Solomon Islands National Disaster Management official, Julian McLeod who also said that communication is difficult because most communication lines are under water. The government of the Solomon Islands reported in a press release, April 2, two confirmed deaths and several others missing in Sasamunga village in South Choiseul. The press release described 10 meters high waves that pushed 500 meters inland. The hospital in Sasamunga village was destroyed by the waves. In addition, nearby villages reported damage to health centres and schools. The premier of Choiseul, Jackson Kiloe, declared his province "in disaster" and called on the Solomon government disaster authorities to contact the province.

April Volunteer of the Month

APRIL VOLUNTEER ANDI BELK
andrea_belk.jpg

A disability doesn't get in the way of this April Volunteer of the Month from being active in the Florence CERT Organization as well as other community volunteer work. Andi Belk, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, worked as an Emergency Medical Technician Officer (EMT) and Dispatcher for the Sacramento County Fire Department in California for 17 years before moving to Florence with her husband Bob. She has a Teaching Certificate in Fire Science. Before that, she was a Catholic Nun for ten years having to give that up for health reasons. She later met her husband Bob. Andi is a very active woman. Andi is also a retired Florence School District secretary. Her activities here include CERT, Neighborhood Watch with the Florence Auxiliary Police, she is a Florentine Estates Board Member, and is involved with the Beach Cleanup Program, Relay for Life and helping out at Honeyman State Park. And those activities don't include her hobbies. She participates with the Last Resort Players (a local theatrical group), the Florence Rod and Gun Club and is involved with her husband who flies small airplanes here locally. Both she and her husband keep quit busy as you can see. They also belong to the local Elks. It's nice to have such diversity in Florence. Thank you Andi and Bob for your efforts. We have a stronger community and CERT program because of it.
