Large earthquake off Japan, tsunami warning issued
From Wikinews, the free news source you can write!

March 25, 2007

Japan issued a tsunami warning after experiencing a magnitude 7.1 earthquake off the west coast island of Honshu. The US Geological Survey reported a a magnitude 6.7 earthquake on March 25, 2007 at 9:41 a.m. local time near the west coast of Honshu and a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in the Southern Pacific off Vanuatu at 11:40 a.m. local time. The tremor did not trigger a tsunami. Japan's Meteorological Agency lifted the tsunami advisory for Ishikawa prefecture at 11:30 a.m. JST. ABC news says that 21 people died in the quake. The death occurred after a woman was struck, reportedly, by a stone lantern in her garden. NHK also states that South Korea's meteorological agency broadcast a tsunami advisory for the eastern and southeastern coast areas. A 50 cm tsunami was expected to reach the Busan area at 12:02 pm local time. NHK also reported that the Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant in Niigata prefecture was operating normally. Hokuriku Electric Power Co. reported no effects from the earthquake and that the Number 1 and 2 reactors at its Shika nuclear power plant were shut down. It is reported that some 9400 homes in the region are without water and approximately 100 without electricity. Some roads have been damaged, railway service interrupted in the affected areas, and the Noto Airport in Ishikawa prefecture remains closed.

MAY VOLUNTEER

philkoch.jpg

The May Volunteer of the month is no stranger to volunteerism. Phil Koch, who has been with CERT for four years now, is a real asset to our non-profit organization. Phil comes to us from Phoenix, Arizona, where he worked for the Superior Court for the State of Arizona for 30 years in the Special Assignment/Special Crimes Duties Office. He worked with the Juvenile Trial Process Court which was involved with juvenile offenders who needed to be tried in the adult court system. While in Arizona, he also did volunteer work at the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Phoenix as Co-Coordinator in the Emergency Room Trauma Care Unit. Phil came to the Florence area in 2003. Besides volunteering for CERT, he is a volunteer Fireman with Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue. He is a Juvenile Fire Setter Specialist who works with kids concerning fire prevention, education and safety. Phil is one of our CERT Class Instructors. He teaches Medical I & II, Disaster Psychology (Trauma) and Terrorism. He is also Coordinator for Fire Corps, which is part of the CERT program. When he is not volunteering for CERT, Phil volunteers with Florence's Habitat for Humanity and assists with their Resale Store located behind Ron's Paint in Florence. The store is open on the first Thursday, Friday and Saturday of each month, selling discount home improvement supplies to raise money for the Habitat for Humanity program. If that's not enough, Phil helps out at Honeyman State Park, south of town, keeping the shrubs and bushes in shape primarily for fire prevention hazards and proper appearance. CERT appreciates all of our volunteers and congratulates Phil Koch for his work with the CERT program and the Florence community.
