Volunteer of the Month

JACQUIE BEVERIDGE
jacquie_cropped.jpg

The CERT Volunteer of the month is no stranger to Volunteerism.  CERT Publicity Director, Jacquie Beveridge, has been quite active in CERT and other activities here in Florence.  Since “retiring” to Florence several years ago with her husband, Larry, she has become the Activity Committee co-chair at Coast Village where she also serves on the Board of Directors.  Jacquie co-founded the Florence Herb Enthusiasts, a “growing” group of people who are interested in exploring, experiencing and learning about culinary, craft and medicinal uses of herbs through monthly meetings and field trips.  She is currently serving as Publicity Director on the CERT Board of Directors and is also on the Disaster Prepardness Expo Committee.  This past June, she graduated from the Ford Family Foundation Leadership Program.

Her life has been directed toward serving others, including a 20-year career in law enforcement for the City of San Diego and later for San Diego County as a deputy.  Part of her career included being a Police Officer/EMT before San Diego had paramedic service.  Besides being a training officer, Jacquie coordinated the Court Emergency Medical Unit, taught Earthquake Prepardness, CPR, First Aid, and First Responder classes.  She also served as chair of the San Diego Public Safety Committee, a committee founded in 1925, concerned with all aspects of safety for San Diego County.

Jacquie’s life hasn’t always been easy, especially coping with the loss of two of her sons.  For 12 years, she was the Administrator for the Hug-A-Tree and Survive Program, a survival education program for children ages 5-12.  This program was developed as a direct result of the tragic death of her 9-year old son, Jimmy.  In addition to teaching children essential wilderness survival education techniques, she wrote the training manuals for presenters and trainers, did fund raising, wrote press releases, trained presenters from all over the world at Search and Rescue conferences and coordinated 1,500 presenters.

After retiring from San Diego County, she returned to school and received a certification as a Holistic Health Practitioner and also became a Certified Healing Touch Practitioner.  In her private practice, she provided therapeutic massage and Healing Touch.  Jacquie also worked part time for an alternative cancer treatment clinic and said she had the blessing of working on patients from all over the world.  Jacquie has also volunteered her services for many Hospice patients.

Jacquie is not all work and no play.  She loves to travel (especially with her husband), garden, go to yoga and qigong classes, and spend time with her four living children, ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  According to Jacquie, she is thankful to be living in Florence….”the best place in the world.”  Thank you, Jacquie, for your support of CERT and our community.  It shows!!

COAST VILLAGE EARTHQUAKE DISASTER DRILL (JUNE 30TH)

CERT would like to thank all who participated in the earthquake drill on Saturday, June 30th at Coast Village.
Everyone did a fantastic job.  The weather was perfect.  Even though we encountered some difficulties and everything didn't go as expected, it was a very successful learning experience for all of us.  We will definitely be reviewing how we can do things better in the future.  Thanks for everyone's patience.  Have a fun and safe summer!!
